Core formulas
The formulas to keep straight
Etsy cost = listing fee + transaction fee + payment processing + optional adsShopify cost = monthly plan + payment processing + apps + third-party transaction fee if applicableMonthly break-even orders = monthly fixed Shopify cost / per-order fee savingsNet profit = revenue - platform cost - payment fees - COGS - shipping - adsIs Etsy or Shopify cheaper?
Etsy is usually cheaper for a new seller because there is no required monthly store subscription and buyers can find listings inside the marketplace. Shopify can become cheaper at higher volume when the seller already has traffic.
The mistake is comparing Etsy's 6.5% transaction fee to a Shopify payment rate. Shopify still has a plan, payment processing, apps, themes, and traffic cost.
Etsy vs Shopify cost categories, checked July 4, 2026
| Cost | Etsy | Shopify |
|---|---|---|
| Marketplace or store access | $0.20 listing fee, listing renews after sale or expiry | Monthly plan |
| Marketplace transaction fee | 6.5% on item price plus shipping and gift wrap | No Etsy-style marketplace fee |
| Payment processing | Etsy Payments rate by seller country | Payment processor rate by plan and country |
| Traffic | Marketplace search can bring buyers | Seller must bring traffic |
| Apps and add-ons | Optional Etsy tools | Apps can become a real monthly cost |
When does Shopify start to make sense?
Shopify starts to make sense when the seller can cover the monthly fixed cost with repeat orders, email buyers, search traffic, or paid ads that still leave profit. If every Shopify order needs paid traffic, the payment fee is not the whole cost.
Use monthly break-even math. If Shopify saves $2 per order but costs $39 a month before apps, the store needs 20 profitable orders just to cover the plan.
Simple Shopify break-even example
| Assumption | Value |
|---|---|
| Monthly fixed store cost | $39 |
| Per-order fee savings compared with Etsy | $2.00 |
| Orders needed to cover fixed cost | 20 |
| If paid traffic costs $5 per order | Savings disappear |
| Best signal | Repeat buyers from your own list |
Should handmade sellers use both Etsy and Shopify?
Many sellers should use both, but not too early. Etsy can test product demand. Shopify can protect repeat purchase margin once the seller has proof that people buy without Etsy search.
The clean path is to start with Etsy economics, build a customer list where allowed, then move repeat demand to an owned store only when the numbers justify it.
- Use Etsy to test product-market fit.
- Use Shopify when repeat demand exists.
- Track profit by channel.
- Do not copy Etsy prices to Shopify without checking payment and traffic cost.
Decision table
Etsy vs Shopify decision table
| Seller situation | Better first move | Why |
|---|---|---|
| No audience yet | Etsy | Marketplace demand has value. |
| Repeat buyers already exist | Shopify | Owned demand can lower dependency. |
| Low order volume | Etsy | Fixed monthly cost is harder to cover. |
| High volume and strong brand search | Shopify or both | Fixed cost spreads across orders. |
| Unsure product demand | Etsy test | Cheaper proof before building a store. |
Worked examples
Examples you can compare against your own numbers
Example: 100 orders at $50
A seller compares a $50 product with free shipping across 100 monthly orders. The Shopify side uses seller-entered plan and processor assumptions.
| Etsy standard fee per $50 order | $5.20 | US example before COGS, labels, ads, and optional services. |
|---|---|---|
| 100 Etsy orders | $520 | Standard Etsy fees before product cost. |
| Shopify fixed monthly cost | $39 | Example fixed cost, replace with the current plan shown in your country. |
| Break-even question | Can Shopify save more than $39? | Only after payment, apps, and traffic. |
Takeaway: Shopify wins only when the saved marketplace cost is larger than the added fixed and traffic costs.

FAQs
Questions people ask before making the decision
Is Shopify cheaper than Etsy?
Shopify can be cheaper at higher repeat volume, but it is not automatically cheaper. Add the monthly plan, payment processing, apps, and traffic cost before deciding.
Is Etsy better for beginners?
Usually, yes. Etsy gives a new seller a marketplace to test demand without building a full traffic engine first.
Should I leave Etsy for Shopify?
Do not leave only because Etsy fees feel high. Leave or add Shopify when your own traffic can produce profitable orders after the store's fixed costs.
Can I use Etsy and Shopify together?
Yes. The clean setup is to track profit by channel and keep each channel only if it earns its keep.
What is the main Shopify cost sellers forget?
Traffic. A Shopify store does not bring marketplace search by default, so paid ads, content, email, or social demand must do that job.
